Hey guys! Hope you all are well an had a wonderful holiday season, filled with fun and hopefully not too many headaches from your family members.
But now 2017 is upon us and with that comes along with new reading goals to conquer, which is why I’m going to boost this reading challenge right here.
Some of you may be wondering, “Syd, what the hell is this?” and on the other hand some of you probably already know what Diversity Bingo is and to those of you who know, I hope you’re as excited as I am!
Allow me to quickly explain what this beauty of a sheet is and what all of this is for. Recently, more and more marginalized reviewers and just the book community in general have been raising their voices in support of more diversity in Young Adult literature. Reviewers are now being more open about holding authors and publishers directly accountable should there be harmful representation of a marginalized group in a book, and now the call for expanded and better representation is louder than ever.
However, as a community we have a responsibility too; to support these books and to lift them up so that they can be just as mainstream as what the current most popular books are. We need to show the publishing company’s that there is a high interest in #ownvoices and diverse characters in YA, and that we want this representation to be treated sincerely and with scrutiny.
This is where #DiversityBingo2017 comes in. The sheet is full of prompts and challenges to help guide you on your journey to read more diversely over the course of the year. The main goal is to fill in as many squares as you can by the end of the year! By no means do I want any of you guys to feel pressured and overwhelmed by the challenge, but I do challenge you guys to try and fill in at least one row or column on the sheet!
Please follow the original creators of #DiversityBingo2017 (their Twitter handles are on the top of the sheet) and I will have my TBR for all of the prompts up hopefully by next week which will hopefully help get you started on what books you might want to read! So many books, so little time!
Until next time! Xoxo
